Motorists wishing to access I-440 from I-40, US-1, or US-64 should take I-40 Westbound to Exit 289, Wade Avenue (SR 1728). Continue on Wade Avenue (SR 1728) for 2.2 miles and take the exit for I-440 E/US-1 N toward Wake Forest and Rocky Mount to access I-440 Eastbound from mile marker 4. Motorists already on I-440 Eastbound should take Exit 3, Hillsborough Street (NC 54). Turn right onto NC-54 Westbound (Hillsborough Street) and continue for 1.3 miles. Take a slight right to stay on NC-54 Westbound and continue for 1.6 miles. Take a right onto the I-40 Westbound ramp to Durham. Continue on I-40 Westbound for 0.8 miles and take Exit 289, Wade Avenue (SR 1728). Continue on Wade Avenue (SR 1728) for 2.2 miles and take the exit for I-440 E/US-1 N toward Wake Forest and Rocky Mount to access I-440 Eastbound from mile marker 4.
